11/29/2023 0 Comments Lesser spellstone![]() One of the reasons I like the book is its use of words. When she finds the odd-looking stone with moving pictures - the Spellstone of the title - Emily’s life takes a fantastic turn, and kids will probably enjoy seeing the transformation this unusual object has on her and her friends and family. The fantasy part, of course, is an opportunity for readers to live vicariously through Emily’s adventures. In this sense, the tale is grounded in fears young readers can understand. The story involves Emily moving and having to start all over - new school, making new friends, learning the social hierarchy of her peers, etc. ![]() Things aren’t that great at home either, since her parents tend to downplay her concerns and not take them as seriously as she does, and her siblings almost treat her as if she’s not there. The title character feels like an outsider at school, especially when another girl dedicates herself to marginalizing Emily. “Emily and the Spellstone” addresses a number of topics that will attract readers of middle-school age. Will be an enjoyable read for kids in the 4th-7th grade range who are ready to handle some of the images it might give them with such creative wording.Īm so glad I read it to the end but now I just wonder.if there will be more adventures for Emily. The story is so rich with language both real and made up fun words. There is someone else who was in the library that day listening and watching and as a result Emily ends up making a friend and having someone else to help her along the way. It ends up being really interesting the bond between Gorgo and Emily almost sweet if you can say that about a demon.Įmily ends up needing more help to keep the stone away from the underworld and ends going to the school library which has a magical bookshelf with the "L"ibrarian who knows about the secrets of the other realms. She finds this stone and there is a demon trapped in the stone named Gorgo for short.Įnds up letting him out and the adventure they face as they try to keep the stone safe from someone even darker who wants the stone so he can take over and control everything around him. The story of what Emily is going through aside from the magical aspect of it is something that many kids can relate to.įeelings of not fitting in at school and at times even at home. I will say for some kids it could be a bit much if they read this kind of book before they are ready.Ĭlearly a sign of good writing though that you can get so caught up in the story that it at times creeps you out due to the descriptions of the underworld that are in this book. ![]() I almost gave up at times because of the dark realm parts of the book but I am so glad that I kept reading this story. So the evil / demons part caught me a bit off guard. ![]() I did not read the description closely enough before picking this book to review.
